What is the ECE104 regulation?
Simply, the ECE104 regulation establishes guidelines for the use of retroreflective safety markings on heavy goods vehicles in Europe.
Since July 2011, all newly registered HGVs over 7.5 tonnes and trailers over 3.5 tonnes operating in the UK, are required to be fitted with homologated retro-reflective markings which must carry the “E-mark”.
How the markings need to be placed depends on the size of the vehicle. For example, a complete contour line marking or box needs to be applied if the back of the vehicle exceeds 2100mm. Markings need to be as close as possible to the edge of the vehicle and should equal at least 80% of the overall width of the vehicle.
For the UK, the preferred colours are yellow to the side and red to the rear.
Why are retroreflective markings necessary?
By making vehicles more reflective and thus visible in low light, more accidents and crashes are prevented leading to less fatalities on the road.
Other benefits include less downtime and repair due to accidents, less expenses on missed contracts or potential legal costs, employees are more protected on the road and in depots, and a more professional image is presented to the public.
