3M Thin Bonding Tapes; Designed for Versatility

What are 3M thin bonding tapes?

3M thin bonding tapes have a thickness of 0.25mm or less, offering an almost invisible industrial strength bond for various applications, reducing the need for bulky fasteners.

The types of thin bonding tape available are double coated tapes or adhesive transfer tapes, both provide shear strength, conformability and high initial adhesion and can be used for applications across industries from signage to appliances.

Why use thin bonding tapes?

3M thin bonding tapes are designed for versatility, featuring exceptional conformability for complex shapes and demanding surfaces.

Using tape instead of liquid adhesives allows you to use the exact amount needed, cutting it to the precise shape. Tapes also provide more production flexibility, requiring no curing time and allowing you to leave the liner in place until the second substrate is ready, or simply apply the adhesive in advance.

Additionally, these tapes allow for bonding of different substrates while keeping the overall profile as thin as possible. They are a lightweight solution to mechanical fasteners and can be used manually or automated.

What is the difference between transfer and double coated tape?

When choosing a tape, the adhesive is not the only consideration, substrate and production process need to be considered.

For rough or textured surfaces, transfer tape is generally the better choice due to the thickness of the adhesive layer and lack of carrier. However, the carrier on double coated tapes allows for more stability and convertibility, meaning they are better for producing die cut shapes.

Key differences:

  • Transfer tapes do not have a carrier
  • Transfer tapes have a higher flexibility and conformability
  • Transfer tapes more effectively compensate for rough surfaces
  • Transfer tapes have a higher temperature resistance
  • Double coated tapes have increased internal stability
  • Double coated tapes are easier to handle and to die cut
  • Double coated tapes can have different adhesives on both sides

Product Highlights

Scotch ATG Adhesive Transfer Tape 969

ATG 969 is an acrylic, reverse wound, pressure sensitive adhesive with high initial adhesion, which is versatile, convenient and easy to use. This tape offers good holding power on a range of substrates including plastics, glossy coated materials and rough surfaces.

The ATG tape range are reverse wound versions of standard 3M transfer tapes for use in Scotch ATG dispensers. This system allows for controlled application of adhesive while the liner rewinds back into the applicator. These transfer tapes are cost effective solutions to mechanical fasteners and liquid adhesives, and are also a safer option than hot melt adhesive

ATG 969 leaves behind no mess, no residue and no odour and is suitable for heavy duty bonding applications and for use across industries including packaging, point of purchase, appliances, electronics, and transportation.
